Gingiva Reshaping and Contouring

Before Photo Picture Gum Shaping Contouring Our patient is a 30 something year old professional ballerina who has a career that requires high visibility.

Over the past few years, the patient became increasingly self conscious of her physical features and especially her smile. She was at the point where she wanted her teeth to have an appearance that matched the way she felt and would eliminate the hesitancy she now had in smiling spontaneously.

Specifically, she didn't like the size of her teeth, the amount of exposed gum tissue and the overall condition of her teeth. Her goal, in simple terms, was to have a compete reconstructive and restorative makeover.

Her General Dentist recommended a number of new porcelain products, including crowns and premium veneers.

To create the degree of perfection she wanted, the patient agreed with the decision to have specialized crown lengthening coupled with gum recontouring to create a sound foundation for a complete makeover that would have the highest endurance possible.

Dr. Nemeth consulted with the patient's dentist and provided the periodontic crown lengthening and associated gingival alterations on a tooth by tooth basis, in preparation for the restorative procedures the dentist would provide.

Before Photo Picture Shaping Contouring Because the patient had several mismatched tooth structures that lacked the typical symmetry that Mother Nature normally provides, Dr. Nemeth created, through surgery, the necessary relationships between individual teeth and also between each tooth and surrounding gum tissues.

This degree of attention to detail assured the patient and her dentist that the restorative treatments would achieve sizing and symmetry relationships that are normalized and also provide the best opportunities for cosmetic and dental function outcomes that will not fail.

Dr. Nemeth's crown lengthening procedures (also known as gum shaping, recontouring, gummy smile reshaping, etc.) were performed primarily across the entire upper (maxilla) jaw. Connective tissue grafting was also performed as needed to correct tissue deficiencies.

After Photo Gum Contouring The adjacent photo shows the changes in gum tissue and change in tooth height for several teeth. These teeth will eventually be restored with crowns or porcelain veneers.

To assure a truly relaxed state for the patient and optimal surgery environment, the patient was provided IV Sedation along with oral medications including Valium and Versed. Dr. Nemeth used a combination of a scalpel and a high speed dental burr for recontouring bone on some tooth structures, as needed.

Tissue grafts were also performed in some areas. The graft material was obtained directly from the patient's palate... thereby assuring grafting success. Ethicon was the suture material of choice.

Tissue healing was completed in about two weeks. The patient and her dentist were quite pleased with the periodontic treatment outcomes. The final results, after the restoration procedures were completed, were quite dramatic.

Based on unsolicited testimony, the patient reported that the impact of her makeover experience was significant for her. Her self confidence in common social activites bloomed along with her career activities.

The patient's before and after gummy smile makeover photos are paired here to demonstrate the cosmetic drama she was looking for.
